The Narrow Climb

Scriptures
  • Hebrews 11:8
  • Proverbs 3:5–6
  • Isaiah 6:8

Abraham is told to go, and the destination is withheld. Whatever else that is, it is not a plan.

We prefer to understand and then obey. It feels responsible. But almost no one in Scripture is given that order.

This is not a call to be reckless. Abraham is not obeying a hunch; he is obeying a God he has already met. The trust is in the character, not in the clarity.

The climb is narrow, and narrow means you cannot carry everything up it. Some of what you are carrying is not sin — it is simply too heavy for this stretch.

And the summit does not arrive when you expected. In my own life every significant obedience looked like a mistake for about a year.

If you are at the foot of something today, do not wait for the whole map. Take the next step you can actually see, and say it out loud to one person so you cannot quietly withdraw it in the morning.
